In the United States, HBO Max has merged with Discovery Plus to become simply Max. Along with this rebranding, Max has introduced much stricter login requirements to use the service.
To watch Max, you must have an HBO Max or Max account registered in the United States and paid for using a US payment method. HBO Max remains available (for now) in:
- Argentina
- Brazil
- Chile
- Colombia
- Costa Rica
- Czech Republic
- Mexico
- Norway
- Peru
- Poland
- Spain

How to watch Max or HBO Max with Proton VPN
Step 1: Get a Max or HBO Max subscription.
To watch Max, you must have an HBO Max or Max account registered in the United States and paid for using a US payment method. You cannot connect to Max using an HBO Max account purchased elsewhere or paid for using a non-US payment method.
To watch HBO Max, you can use any subscription purchased outside the US.
Step 2: Get a VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, or Proton Family subscription
If you already have a VPN Plus, Proton Family, Proton Unlimited, or Visionary (legacy users only) account, you can skip to step 3.
If you’re a new user, sign up for Proton VPN.
If you already have a Free plan, upgrade your account by signing in and selecting VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited from your account Subscription page.
Step 3: Install our app
You’ll need to download the Proton VPN app for your device.

To watch Max or HBO Max on a mobile device, you’ll also need to download the Max or HBO Max apps from the App Store or Play Store in a supported country (the United States for Max).
Step 4: Connect to a Plus server
If you have a US-based Max account, connect to any Plus server located in the United States.
To watch HBO Max in Spain, Norway, Poland, or the Czech Republic, connect to a Plus server in one of these countries.
Plus servers are clearly marked in our Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS/iPadOS apps.
On your Android TV, connecting to the United States will automatically connect you to a Plus server if you have a paid subscription.
Plus servers are available for Plus, Unlimited, Family, and Visionary Plan subscribers.
Step 5: Start watching Max or HBO Max securely with Proton VPN!
