To protect the privacy of the Proton community, we are removing our VPN servers physically located in India.

This is in response to a new law in India that is going into effect in September 2022 that would require the data centers we work with to begin logging user activity.  This is against everything we stand for. We work to ensure that Proton VPN keeps your online browsing private with a strict no-logs policy that was recently audited by independent security professionals

You can continue to connect to any of our international servers, or you can connect to our new Smart Routing servers for India. These will give you an Indian IP address and behave just as our physical servers in India did. The only difference is that, in reality, they are based in Singapore.

Learn more about Smart Routing

By using our Smart Routing servers that are based in Singapore, we can continue to offer the Proton community private, no-logs VPN service with an Indian IP address.  If you live in India or used to connect to our India-based VPN servers from elsewhere, you can switch to these Smart Routing servers and use Proton VPN just as before.

Why are we doing this?

In April 2022, India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) announced a new rule requiring all virtual private network (VPN) providers, data centers, and cloud service providers operating in India to collect and report ”extensive and accurate” data from their users for five years.

Under this law, Indian VPN providers and data centers are expected to log:

  • Your full name, physical address, email address, and phone number
  • The IP address you used to register for the VPN, together with a timestamp
  • The IP addresses you use connect to VPN servers in India, together with a timestamp for each connection
  • A list of all IP addresses issued to each customer
  • Your reason for using a VPN

The directive will come into full effect on September 25, 2022. Failure to comply can lead to one year in prison.

At Proton, our aim is to build an internet where privacy is the default. From Hong Kong to Belarus to Myanmar, we actively fight for freedom of expression around the world.

This is why we maintain a robust no-logs policy that is guaranteed by Swiss law. We never log IP addresses, browsing history, DNS queries, or any other information that can compromise your privacy.

We have no intention of complying with this invasive mass surveillance law, leaving us no choice but to remove our VPN servers from Indian jurisdiction.

We’re still here for you!

If you connect to Proton VPN from India, there is nothing to worry about. Connect to any Proton VPN server for uncensored and no-logs access to the internet.

If you want an Indian IP address, connect to one of our India Smart Routing servers.

Doing this allows you access content only available in India, but with no logs, and fast connections thanks to our unique VPN Accelerator technology.

We are happy to announce the addition of the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt, and Nigeria to the Proton VPN network, with Georgia following in the coming weeks. This brings our coverage to 61 countries, making Proton VPN one of the largest VPN networks in the world.

Anyone with a Plus or Visionary plan can now access content that is blocked in the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Egypt, Nigeria, and Georgia. And anyone can access those locations while connected to our new Smart Routing servers for maximum speed performance, privacy, and uninterrupted access to local online services.

Several of these countries have been highly requested by our community, most notably the Philippines, which was voted second in our poll last year.

See where all Proton VPN servers are located.

Smart Routing technology keeps you secure, private, and safe

At Proton, our top priority is and has always been the online privacy of our community. Safely operating VPN servers in some countries can be difficult, which is why we are introducing our Smart Routing technology with these new servers.

Smart Routing allows users to gain access to new VPN countries without the risk associated with having servers in more sensitive locations. For all intents and purposes, servers in Smart Routing-enabled countries will behave exactly the same as other servers on the Proton VPN network do.

The only difference is that the hardware – the actual server – is not physically based in the country displayed as the VPN location. The physical locations of our bare-metal servers for Smart Routing-enabled countries are:

  • Philippines → Singapore
  • Vietnam → Singapore
  • Cambodia → Singapore
  • Nigeria → Madrid
  • Egypt → Bucharest

Our new Georgia servers (which will go live in the coming weeks) do not use Smart Routing and are based in Georgia itself. Additionally, we are using Smart Routing technology to double our server capacity in some countries where we also offer physical servers:

  • Brazil → Miami
  • South Korea → Singapore
  • Taiwan → Singapore

By connecting to these new servers, you can browse the internet as though you were based in the location displayed, with the added benefit of being protected by Proton VPN security.

Building a better internet

Proton is a mission-driven company whose goal is to make online security and privacy accessible to all. Our new server locations and the Smart Routing technology that underpins them further this aim.

Thank you for your support and please keep an eye out for new developments. We have exciting news to share very soon and we cannot wait to tell you all about what’s in store!

Thank you for choosing the new Proton VPN, and don’t forget to share your feedback.

The post Increase VPN speeds by up to 400% with VPN Accelerator appeared first on Proton VPN Blog.

]]>
Proton VPN has a long history of developing new solutions to complex and difficult problems, including ways to defeat attempts to block VPNs and advertisers tracking users across the internet. As a company created by scientists who met at CERN, we have a strong culture of research and development, and we have recently leveraged this to significantly increase VPN speeds with a new feature called VPN Accelerator.

VPN Accelerator improves VPN connection stability and can increase our VPN speeds by up to 400% in certain situations. Thanks to this new technology, you can always enjoy the best possible VPN speeds when using our service.

VPN Accelerator is enabled by default, works on all Proton VPN apps, improves performance for all VPN protocols, and is available for all users.

How does VPN Accelerator work?

VPN Accelerator is unique to Proton VPN and comprises a set of unique technologies developed internally by our research team to better leverage our large network capacity.

ProtonVPN’s capacity across our networks, which we are constantly expanding, currently exceeds 1 terabit per second (1,000 Gbps) and is one of the largest VPN networks in existence. For comparison, SwissIX, the largest internet exchange point in Switzerland, has a daily average network capacity of 80 Gbps.

However, capacity is just one element of VPN speed, and it is often not the limiting factor for VPN performance. Below, we look at how VPN Accelerator can unlock even higher VPN speeds by overcoming other limiting factors.

Overcoming CPU limitations

Server CPU speed is often a limiting factor because many popular VPN protocols (including OpenVPN) do not use multithreading. This means the CPU power of a single core on the server processor becomes the limiting factor for speeds.

Proton VPN solves this problem by using multiple OpenVPN processes per server to fully take advantage of multi-core processors. However, this alone is not enough to fully address the problem unless the load is properly distributed between the multiple processes. Otherwise, a single CPU thread could become overloaded.

To resolve this, we have re-engineered OpenVPN so that sessions can be evenly distributed to all running OpenVPN processes, eliminating the possibility of a single thread becoming overloaded. Similar techniques are also applied by other VPN protocols.

Benefits of parallel processing

Latency and TCP congestion

TCP (transmission control protocol) carries the bulk of the world’s internet traffic. TCP goodput is inversely proportional to latency and packet loss, which is why internet speed tests usually select servers as close to you as possible.

Goodput

The number of useful bits of information delivered within a certain time. Goodput can be calculated by dividing the size of a transmitted file by the time it takes to transfer the file.

Establishing connections to very distant servers can result in low TCP speeds. This has nothing specifically to do with using a VPN, but connecting to a VPN can amplify this issue by increasing the length of the end-to-end path from your device to the final server.

To give an extreme example, if you were in Switzerland, connected to a server in New Zealand, and visited a website in the US, your traffic would travel most of the way around the world, resulting in approximately 600 ms of round trip delay (RTD) latency.

We cannot increase the speed of light or bring New Zealand closer to Europe, but VPN Accelerator addresses the issue by breaking up the 600 ms path into shorter paths (for example, two 300 ms paths). Much faster goodput is possible on each of the shorter paths, resulting in higher combined performance over the entire path.

To achieve even higher speeds, VPN Accelerator also uses a TCP delay-controlled TCP flow control algorithm called BBR along each path. On longer paths or congested networks there is often some level of packet loss. BBR recovers faster from packet loss and also ramps up quicker (that is, it achieves maximum speed faster when a data transfer begins).

Chart showing advantage of TCP with BBR over standard TCP

For high latency servers, or when there is packet loss, the performance increase can be game-changing. The performance gain is less noticeable when connected to a nearby server with perfect connectivity. In the example below, we see that even with just 1.5% packet loss, BBR provides a 100x performance improvement compared to other congestion control algorithms.

Improving “forwarding” efficiency

Most TCP congestion algorithms are quite sensitive to gaps or sudden delays in packet forwarding. It is therefore important to reduce any risk of a stall (a small duration where packets are either queued or dropped) as these stalls result in a strong reduction of TCP pacing and subsequent performance.

As part of our work on VPN Accelerator, Proton VPN’s research and development team also addressed protocol-specific issues that can lead to stalls. For example, there are inefficiencies in the OpenVPN and IKEv2 core code that can sometimes cause the control socket to be blocked. By offloading interprocess communications to custom-written “companion” processes, we were able to eliminate this class of stalls.

Usually, each Proton VPN server processes more than 100,000 packets per second, which adds up to a significant amount of CPU time. By modifying the Linux network stack on our servers, Proton VPN circumvents the normal packet processing path for “known traffic,” leading to a significant increase in speed and decrease in latency.

Lastly, Proton VPN avoids the virtual servers, virtualization, or containers used by many other VPN services. Our entire infrastructure is installed on bare-metal servers, eliminating the need to forward encrypted packets between virtual machines or containers and their host machines. This further reduces latency and boosts speed.

Diagram showing why bare metal servers are faster than virtualized servers

How you can benefit from faster VPN speeds

Under normal usage, VPN Accelerator can increase connection speeds by 400% or more — particularly when connecting to more distant servers.

Because VPN Accelerator is built into all Proton VPN apps, you don’t need to do anything to take advantage of this unique technology. VPN Accelerator also allows different VPN protocols to achieve similar performance. So, for example, with VPN Accelerator, OpenVPN with Proton VPN offers similar performance to the usually much faster WireGuard.

Under ideal network conditions, VPN Accelerator may not make any improvement on performance. However, more often than not, network conditions are less than ideal. With Proton VPN, no matter which server you connect to or where you are, you will always automatically get the fastest speeds possible.

FAQ

Does VPN Accelerator really improve download speeds?

Yes, although the greatest gains are made when you access a service that is located far from your real location. If you connect to a server that is geographically near you, you may not see significant speed improvements.

Is the feature enabled by default?

Yes. This is because there are no real downsides to using VPN Accelerator, but very real advantages under the right circumstances.  You can, however, manually enable or disable the feature in most of our apps. See How to use VPN Accelerator for details.

Does VPN Accelerator improve speed performance for all VPN protocols?

Yes. VPN Accelerator will improve speed performance regardless of whether you use OpenVPN TCP, OpenVPN UDP, WireGuard, or IKEv2 VPN protocols.

Proton VPN was launched in 2017 in response to attempts by authoritarian regimes to block access to Proton Mail. Since then, Proton VPN has become one of the most important and widely used tools for defeating censorship and protecting freedom of speech worldwide.

Advancing the cause of internet freedom is an important part of what we do, and this has a real-world impact. In just the last year, Proton VPN was used around the world, including in Belarus, Hong Kong, and Myanmar, and in March, the United Nations recommended using Proton services to bypass censorship attempts.

Alternative Routing for macOS and iOS

In the face of increasingly advanced state censorship attempts, in 2020, Proton launched our unique Alternative Routing technology. This helps you access Proton VPN if your government, ISP, or network administrator has blocked access to our service by routing your connection through networks that are not blocked.

We have been progressively rolling out this powerful anti-censorship feature across all our products and services. Today, we are happy to announce that Alternative Routing is now available on our macOS and iOS Proton VPN apps that are used by millions of people globally.

Learn how Alternative Routing defeats censorship

OpenVPN for macOS

At the same time, we are also rolling out support for the OpenVPN protocol on macOS. Unlike IKEv2 or WireGuard, OpenVPN can operate in TCP mode. This is useful for defeating certain kinds of censorship attempts by governments and network administrators and helps make Proton VPN accessible in difficult locations.

OpenVPN is already available on our Windows, Android, and iOS/iPadOS apps.

macOS change protocol

Smart Protocol for macOS and iOS

We are also progressively rolling out Smart Protocol to all our VPN apps, and this anti-censorship feature is now available on macOS and iOS/iPadOS. Smart Protocol intelligently probes networks to discover the best VPN protocol configuration required for optimal performance or to bypass censorship.

For example, it can automatically switch from IKEv2 to OpenVPN, or OpenVPN UDP to OpenVPN TCP, using different ports as required.

Learn more about how Smart Protocol works

Building an internet without censorship

Proton VPN was founded by scientists who met at CERN, the birthplace of the world wide web, and we are committed to enabling freedom online and ensuring the internet serves the interests of all people.

These new features are now available to anyone using the Proton VPN app on a macOS, iOS, or iPadOS device, including people on our Free plan. We would like to thank everyone who has upgraded to a paid Proton VPN plan for your continued support of our mission. Together, we’re building a better internet. Please also don’t forget to share your feedback about these new features.

FAQ

Can I disable Alternative routing and Smart Protocol?

Yes. These features are enabled by default but are easily disabled in our app’s Settings. Note that you must disable Smart Protocol to manually select the VPN protocol.

Which is the best VPN protocol? Which one should I use?

IKEv2 is secure, but for maximum security, we recommend OpenVPN. OpenVPN in TCP mode can also be effective at defeating censorship blocks because it uses port 443, the same port used by the HTTPS protocol, which secures the vast majority of internet sites. It can therefore be difficult for network administrators to block OpenVPN TCP without shutting down access to the entire internet.

However, IKEv2 is less processor-intensive than OpenVPN, resulting in improved battery life on portable devices such as MacBooks, iPhones, and iPads.

How do I set up a VPN on my Apple device?

We have set up guides for macOS and iOS/iPadOS. You can get Proton VPN for free on macOS as well as iOS.

More about Proton VPN

Proton VPN is a secure, community-supported VPN service. It was developed by the same team that created Proton Mail, the world’s largest encrypted email provider. We offer the only free VPN service that does not have data caps, impose bandwidth limits, use privacy-invading ads, or log user activity.

While our essential security and privacy tools will always be free, we offer extra features to users who choose to upgrade and support our mission.

Proton VPN Plus or Visionary users can activate our Secure Core feature. Secure Core allows you to add another layer of security because it routes your internet traffic through a hardened server before sending it on to an exit server in your desired country. These hardened servers are controlled and owned by Proton VPN, making it less likely that an attacker could access them. By routing your traffic through two servers, Proton VPN offers you protection from even advanced network attacks.

Proton VPN works on various desktop and mobile devices: Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS.

Our mission is to make online security and privacy accessible to all. Thank you for your support. Keep an eye out for new developments on our social media pages below.

Update April 2023: We’ve updated this article to introduce NetShield Privacy Panel.

Today, we’re releasing an exciting new feature that makes it easier for Proton VPN users with a Proton VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, or Visionary plan to keep your devices secure and your browsing private.

NetShield is now available on our Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows apps and is in beta on our Linux command line tool. It blocks malware, ads, and online trackers before they even load. This helps keep your device safe and improves your browsing speed.

How NetShield Ad-blocker protects you

When you turn NetShield on, it offers you two levels of protection:

  • The first level prevents your browser from loading resources from domains that host malware, spyware, or other malicious software.
  • The second level blocks ads and the online trackers that adtech companies use to target you, in addition to blocking malware. This advanced level of protection is on by default when you first enable NetShield.

If you want to use NetShield Ad-blocker to block ads and have a faster and more private browsing experience, upgrade to a Proton VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited plan.

When you enable NetShield, any time you try to go to a website, the Proton VPN app will check that website’s address against a massive database of sites known to host malware, spyware, or any other malicious software. If it finds the domain of the website you are trying to visit or any of its components (scripts, images, etc.) on one of these lists, NetShield will automatically block it from loading.

If you enable ad blocking in NetShield, not only will it protect you from malware, but it will also block the annoying ads that clutter your screen. And unlike most popular ad blockers that only work in your browser, NetShield’s ad and tracker blocking works for the entire device. In addition to being annoying, these ads also eat up data and slow down your browsing experience.

With NetShield Ad-blocker, you can enjoy a faster, ad-free internet and reduce your data usage. And with the Netshield Privacy Panel, you can see how NetShield is protecting your privacy using easy-to-understand statistics that measure how many ads and trackers have been blocked, and how much data has been saved for the current session.

How NetShield works

To visit a website, you need to type in or click on a URL to get to the specific webpage you want. However, most people don’t realize there is a step between entering the URL and arriving at your desired webpage. That extra step involves making a domain name system (DNS) request.

Website URLs are created to be memorable for humans (e.g., www.protonvpn.com), but they don’t mean much to computers. They prefer IP addresses, (e.g., the IP address for Proton VPN’s website is 185.159.159.140). The DNS is the system that translates a human-friendly URL to a machine-friendly IP address. When you type in a URL and hit enter, your browser automatically tries to match it to the correct IP address by sending out a DNS request.

To prevent DNS leaks that could let attackers track your online browsing, Proton VPN encrypts all DNS requests in the VPN tunnel and handles them with a dedicated DNS server.

Learn more about DNS leaks

If you enable NetShield, when your device makes a DNS request, the DNS resolver on Proton VPN’s server runs a quick check against databases of web domains known to host malware, trackers, spyware, and any malicious software that could compromise your device’s security. NetShield checks not only the website’s domain, but also all additional domains for the scripts, images, and any other resources associated with that webpage.

If NetShield finds a match between your DNS request and this list, it stops the DNS request. This prevents you from loading the corresponding IP address and resource.

How NetShield Ad-blocker works

If you think a website or online resource is being blocked in error, you can turn NetShield off to access it.

The system works the same for ad and tracker blocking, only NetShield checks your DNS request against a database of known advertising agencies and online trackers. These lists are continuously updated so they will block new ads and trackers.

Proton VPN does not keep any logs of your DNS requests, so none of this data can be shared with any third parties.

Netshield Privacy Panel

The Netshield Privacy Panel shows how NetShield Ad-blocker is protecting you and improving your browsing experience. With just a glance, you can see:

  • The number of ads blocked
  • The number of trackers blocked
  • The total amount of data saved
The Netshield Privacy Panel

These statistics are for your current session and are reset when you manually disconnect from the VPN. The Netshield Privacy Panel doesn’t reset if you suffer an accidental disconnection, change your kill switch settings, or change VPN protocols.

The Netshield Privacy Panel is available to everyone on a paid Proton VPN plan.

Protect yourself with NetShield Ad-blocker

You can protect your browsing with NetShield today. You will need to have the latest version of the Proton VPN app to use NetShield to block ads and trackers. (You can check for updates in the Settings or About section of the app.)

Learn how to use NetShield

NetShield is part of our effort to make safe online browsing easier and faster. Let us know what you think of NetShield on on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, and Linkedin. And thank you to the Proton VPN community. Without your support, advancements like NetShield would be impossible.

The official Proton VPN CLI is now available https://protonvpn.com/blog/linux-vpn-cli-beta/ Tue, 24 Nov 2020 17:15:40 +0000 https://protonvpn.com/blog/?p=4442 Get private browsing on Linux. The Proton VPN official Linux beta app brings big improvements in stability, security, and efficiency.

The post The official Proton VPN CLI is now available appeared first on Proton VPN Blog.

]]>
July 2021: This article has been updated because the official Linux CLI tool is now a stable release. We now also offer an official Linux app with graphical user interface. Please see How to use Proton VPN on Linux for a full guide on using Proton VPN on Linux systems.

Thanks to our highly engaged user community, we have been able to offer a community-sourced Linux tool for the last two years, which has allowed Linux users to secure their internet connections with Proton VPN. You can get Proton VPN for free on Linux for your preferred distro.

Proton VPN is now pleased to announce a new, official command-line Linux tool developed by the Proton VPN team. This new CLI was produced in-house over several months, allowing us to completely rewrite the code with a focus on improved security.

If you are currently using Proton VPN for Linux Version 2.0, we recommend that you upgrade to the new official client (there are a small number of use cases where this may not be desirable, which we detail below).

Proton VPN for Linux features

Our new Linux CLI has been rebuilt from the ground up. Its streamlined code improves stability and performance and provides a firm foundation for future developments.

It also improves security, allowing us, for example, to properly embed an always-on kill switch into the codebase. And because the CLI minimizes the need to execute code with privileged access, no sudo rights are required.

The new tool is currently available for most Debian-based systems, such as Debian itself (10+), Ubuntu (18.04+), Mint, and Kali, as well as Fedora 33+ and Archlinux / Manjaro.

It features DNS leak protection and IPv6 leak protection, and will automatically re-establish the VPN connection when you switch networks (for example when moving between office and home WiFi networks, or when you suspend and resume your laptop session).

Once our repository has been added to your system’s software sources (see install instructions below), the CLI will be kept updated by your default package manager.

Our new client is completely integrated with NetworkManager. It uses OpenVPN UDP by default, but OpenVPN TCP mode is available. This can be useful for defeating censorship.

The official CLI does not yet support split tunneling, and does not work on headless systems. If required, you can manually setup Proton VPN on headless systems using OpenVPN or IKEv2. We do, however, recommend upgrading to the official CLI where possible.

How to install on Debian-based systems

See How to use the official Linux CLI for full instruction on how to install the Linux CLI on all supported distros.

1. Get the Proton VPN repo setup DEB package

Download the Proton VPN DEB package

2. Install the Proton VPN repository
Open the terminal and run the following:

sudo apt-get install {/path/to/}protonvpn-stable-release_1.0.3_all.deb

3. Update the apt-get package list
Enter the command:

sudo apt-get update

4. Install the Proton VPN Linux CLI
Last step! Type this command:

sudo apt-get install protonvpn-cli

How to use the official Linux CLI

To start using the client, you must log using your regular Proton/Proton VPN account details in with the command:

 protonvpn-cli login [Proton VPN username]

Please note that these are not the OpenVPN/IKEv2 login credentials used by the old community Linux client.

Then simply run:

protonvpn-cli c
GIP of Proton VPN Linux connect

To disconnect, enter:

protonvpn-cli d

The standard kill switch can be enabled with the following command:

protonvpn-cli ks --on

Or the permanent kill switch using:

protonvpn-cli ks --permanent

Detailed instructions on how to use our official Linux CLI client are available here, or to see the full list of commands available, enter:

protonvpn-cli -h

We salute the Proton community

Our official new Linux client replaces the community Linux client that we first launched in 2018, but all of our products will always be powered by our community. Because we do not make money from ads, all product development for everything from Proton VPN for Linux to Proton Calendar and Proton Drive are possible because of user support.

You have also helped us develop and improve our products through participation in our early access programs, where feedback, bug reports and product suggestions help us build privacy services that are most useful to you.

If you have feedback on the new Linux CLI, bug reports and suggestions can be emailed to our development team at service@protonvpn.com

We want to thank all the members of the Proton community. As champions for Proton, you help us to create an internet that values security, privacy, and freedom.

Want to have a virtual residence in Chile? These servers will let anyone outside of the country, no matter where they are, browse the Internet with a Chilean IP address and access geo-restricted content on Chilean websites. For example, these servers will let you stream content from the website of the Canal 13 TV channel.

If you are currently located in Chile, using one of our Chilean VPN servers will help protect your online activity from surveillance by Internet service providers and network administrators.

By connecting to these new servers, you can browse the Internet as though you are in Chile and protect your Internet traffic with an extra layer of encryption.

You can connect to our new servers in Colombia to browse the Internet with a Colombian IP address, access geo-blocked content, and protect your Internet traffic while you use public WiFi. These servers in Colombia are part of our drive to add more options for our users in South America. We have also added new servers in Chile and Peru, which means Proton VPN has servers in 54 countries worldwide.

We installed eight new VPN servers in a data center in Bogota, Colombia.

They are available to users on one of our paid plans. Each new server we install increases our capacity for new users and improves service for our current users.

CO#1-3 are available on our Basic plan.
CO#4-8 are available on our Plus and Visionary plans.

See where all Proton VPN servers are located.

The benefits of Colombian VPN servers

If you connect to these new servers, you will now be able to browse the Internet as though you are located in Colombia, no matter where you are. This means you will be able to access geo-restricted content on Colombian websites.

For everyone in Colombia, you can use these servers to prevent Internet service providers and network administrators from monitoring your online activity.

Now that these eight servers are online, you can browse with a Colombian IP address and protect your Internet traffic with an extra layer of encryption.
