We’ve developed a new VPN protocol, Stealth, that can avoid detection and let you bypass internet censorship and VPN blocks.

We’re pleased to announce Stealth, a new, undetectable VPN protocol that can bypass most firewalls and VPN blocking methods. You’ll be able to bypass advanced VPN blocks, access censored sites, and communicate with people on social media, even if your government is trying to restrict access.

Why is Stealth needed?

In 2017, we launched Proton VPN because there was no trustworthy, reliable, and freely available VPN service. Our motivation was simple. Because our services, such as Proton Mail, play a crucial role in ensuring freedom and privacy worldwide, we knew authoritarian governments would eventually try to block them.

But with Proton VPN, people can bypass those blocks and continue using Proton Mail. Over the past few years, Proton VPN has become an essential tool, helping ensure the free flow of information for tens of millions of people during crises and wars around the world.

Since we launched Proton VPN, we’ve continuously worked on technology to bypass surveillance and censorship. For example, in 2017, we launched Secure Core VPN, which provides greater privacy than typical VPN services.

In 2020, we launched alternative routing, which bypasses VPN blocks by re-routing our connections over other hard-to-trace paths. Finally, in 2021, we released VPN Accelerator, a unique technology that provides connection speeds that are up to 400% faster, which is critically important for users in far-flung regions with slower internet.

As we have stepped up our efforts to build a more censorship-resistant VPN, authoritarian governments have also stepped up their efforts to block VPNs. Traditional VPN protocols (such as OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard) are relatively easy to recognize on a network. And as deep packet inspection (DPI) technology becomes more widespread, it will be easier and easier for authoritarian governments to detect and block VPNs using these protocols.

For years there have been various projects to try to obfuscate existing VPN protocols, but many of them are hacks on top of existing protocols that unfortunately no longer work very well.

We designed our Stealth protocol from the ground up to not have these issues. With Stealth enabled, your Proton VPN connection will be almost completely undetectable.

Stealth is available on all Proton VPN plans, including our Free plan, because everyone deserves online freedom. For now, you can use Stealth on our Android, macOS, and iOS apps.

How do I use Stealth?

To activate Stealth, open the Proton VPN app on your device.

  • On Android,  tap  →  Settings → Advanced → Protocol and choose Stealth.
  • On iOS and iPadOS, tap Settings → Security options → Protocol and choose Stealth.
  • On macOS, ProtonVPN in the macOS taskbar → Preferences → Connection → Protocol and select Stealth from the dropdown menu.

Stealth is not yet available on our Windows or Linux apps.

Learn more about changing VPN protocols

How does the Stealth VPN protocol work?

Stealth uses obfuscation to hide your VPN connection from censors. The general idea is to make VPN traffic look like “normal” traffic — or common HTTPS connections. Stealth does this by using obfuscated TLS tunneling over TCP. This is different from most popular VPN protocols that typically use UDP, making them easier to detect and block. Without going into too much detail, Stealth also establishes VPN connections in a specific and unique way that avoids alerting internet filters.

Despite these obfuscation features, the Stealth VPN protocol is also optimized for high performance and is compatible with our VPN Accelerator technology. Coupled with our lightweight internals, Stealth can achieve higher performance than older obfuscated VPN protocols that are generally built on top of OpenVPN over TCP.

The fight continues

We want to thank the members of the Proton community who helped us test the Stealth VPN protocol over the last couple of months. They live under restrictive censorship regimes, and Stealth would have been impossible to develop without their assistance. Thank you.

However, in the constantly evolving battle for online freedom, our work is not finished. Accordingly, we designed Stealth to be an extensible and adaptable VPN protocol that is flexible enough to meet new challenges.

The cause of freedom has no borders, and we must stand together for it to succeed. Tools like Proton VPN play a vital role in keeping the internet free. Our investment in technologies like Stealth is part of our commitment to provide internet privacy to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

Proton VPN will always be free, but if you would like to support our mission to keep the internet free and open to all, you can subscribe to a paid plan which offers even faster speeds and premium features.

P.S. We want to say thanks to the hundreds of Proton VPN community members who suggested names for our new protocol. Your top choice was Neutrino, which we liked a lot because of the connection to physics. And neutrinos can pass through all matter, making it even more appropriate.

Unfortunately, we felt this name might cause confusion with a Web3 project, so we picked Stealth instead. This was another popular community suggestion, and its meaning is more obvious to those less familiar with physics.

You asked and we listened. Following months of hard work by our engineering team, we are excited to announce a feature that you, our passionate and highly engaged community, have been clamoring for: port forwarding

Now available for our Windows VPN app, port forwarding is a new feature that dramatically improves download speeds when using peer-to-peer (P2P) software. It can also help performance on online gaming platforms.

Port forwarding is available for every Proton VPN user with a paid plan. If you are on our free plan, upgrade now to start benefiting from it.

Upgrade

Why do I need port forwarding when using P2P?

Peer-to-peer file-sharing protocols such as BitTorrent are used to download and upload files using a program called a P2P client.

If you don’t share (seed) your own content with others (your peers), then no content will be available for anyone. P2P protocols were designed to encourage sharing by tying download speeds to upload speeds. So the more you seed, the faster you can download content.

When you seed content, other P2P users will attempt to initiate a connection with your P2P client. It is likely these incoming connections from the internet will be blocked by the firewall we use on our VPN server.

This is not a problem if the peer trying to initiate a connection is not using a VPN or is using a VPN with port forwarding. Your P2P client will be alerted that an incoming connection has been blocked and will attempt to initiate its own connection back to the peer instead. Since this is an outgoing connection, our firewall will not block it.

However, if that peer is behind their own VPN firewall without port forwarding, you will not be able to initiate a connection or share files with them. This can impact your overall upload speeds.

As long as other peers sharing the same content are not behind firewalls with no port forwarding, you can still torrent those files, but your download speeds may be slower.

VPN firewalls without port forwarding also make the entire P2P network less efficient for everyone, an issue that is becoming increasingly important as more and more filesharers use VPNs such as Proton VPN to protect themselves while downloading.

Port forwarding explained

Port forwarding routes incoming connections through the firewall that Proton VPN uses to protect our customers.

Internet traffic enters and exits your computer through ports. These are endpoints designated by your operating system to handle incoming and outgoing connections and are identified by a number.

Many ports have a specific function assigned to them: port 443, for example, is used for HTTPS traffic, while port 6889 is used for BitTorrent traffic. Because ports are endpoints that connect the internet to your computer, they can be exploited by hackers and other malicious actors.

Your router has a built-in firewall, a piece of software that helps protect you from intrusion attempts by monitoring incoming and outgoing internet traffic and blocks access to any ports that have not been earmarked for legitimate use.

Ports explained

However, using a VPN bypasses your router’s firewall as it creates an encrypted tunnel that runs directly from your computer to the VPN server. This prevents the router firewall from seeing any connections made through the tunnel.

how port forwarding works

To protect our customers, Proton VPN therefore implements our own firewall on the VPN server. This performs a similar job to your router firewall, blocking suspicious incoming connections before they can enter your device through the VPN tunnel.

By default, our firewall also blocks incoming connections that you might want or need. Port forwarding solves this problem by routing incoming connections you want through the firewall and directing them to an available (open) port on your computer.

How to set up port forwarding

Proton VPN implements port forwarding in a way that works with all BitTorrent clients and is available immediately upon setup. The feature is available to everyone with a paid Proton VPN plan

If you are on a Free plan and would like to use port forwarding, you can upgrade today.

To enable port forwarding in our Windows app, go to SettingsAdvanced tab and toggle the Port Forwarding switch on. You can then connect to one of our many P2P-enabled servers. To benefit from port forwarding, you will need to configure your P2P client to use the port shown in our VPN app, which is reserved for you by Proton VPN for this purpose.

Please see our Port forwarding support article for further details and instructions on how to configure popular P2P clients to use port forwarding with our service.

Final thoughts

If you are a Windows peer-to-peer user, port forwarding can greatly improve your download speeds. We therefore encourage you to experiment with the feature, and would love to hear your feedback on our usual social media channels.

Please note that Proton VPN does not condone the use of P2P to illegally share copyrighted material.

]]>
Today, we’re launching a new Linux app. It features an elegant and fully featured graphical user interface, making it easy to use on the Linux desktop. Proton VPN is the only VPN service to offer a full-featured, open source, and free Linux application.

We have long been supporters of Linux and open source software. Today, all our apps are open source, and we have long maintained key open source projects such OpenPGPjs and GopenPGP. Linux is also the operating system of choice for many of our team.

As Linux users ourselves, we are keenly aware that Linux support is often viewed as an afterthought by most VPN services. Most Linux VPN apps typically fall far short of the features available to users of other platforms (when they exist at all).

Almost from the very beginning, Proton VPN has supported our Linux users with a command-line Linux tool (CLI) that was developed together with the open source community. This proved to be very popular and has been included in Linux repositories, including Debian, Fedora, and Arch. The new app we are launching today replaces the CLI with something that is more full-featured.

Over the last couple of years, Linux has become an increasingly popular choice for desktop users wanting a highly customizable and open source operating system that is not developed by Microsoft or Apple. This popularity has led to more and more requests for a fully featured Proton VPN Linux app with a graphical user interface.

Image of the Proton VPN Linux app

For this reason, we have spent over a year developing a native open source desktop Linux app that is easy to use and offers all the advanced features you expect from a modern desktop VPN app.

An advanced Linux VPN app

Proton VPN is the only service to offer a full-featured, open source, and free Linux VPN application. Supported features include:

  • Quick Connect
  • NetShield Ad-blocker
  • Kill Switch/Permanent Kill Switch
  • Secure Core
  • DNS leak protection
  • IPv6 leak protection
  • Easy access to our P2P, Tor, and streaming servers
  • Linux desktop integration (via NetworkManager)
  • Available for all Proton VPN users

You can get Proton VPN for free on Linux for the distro of your choice. The Proton VPN Linux app is available to all Proton VPN users, although a paid plan is required to access some advanced features.

For people who prefer to work in Terminal and want an app that uses minimal system resources, there is also a brand new Proton VPN CLI. It offers the complete range of features available in the new Linux app and replaces the Proton VPN Community CLI, which we no longer support.

We strongly recommend upgrading to the official Linux app or the official Linux CLI if your system is compatible. Manual OpenVPN and IKEv2 configuration remain available to those who need it.

We are here to serve you

Proton is a people first company that exists to serve the community. Our new Linux app is fully open source. You can view the source code, open issues, or even submit code improvements. Like the rest of our apps, the new Proton VPN Linux app has also undergone security audits.

If you have any comments, questions, or feedback about the Proton VPN Linux app, please contact our Support team or find us @protonsupport on Twitter.

We’re happy to announce Proton VPN now officially supports Google Chromebooks. You can use the Android app on your Chromebook to unblock censored content, securely stream your favorite shows, and protect your internet connection on public WiFi. Adding official support for Chromebook devices has been a popular request from our community since we released our Android app.

How to download Proton VPN

To use Proton VPN, you will need a modern Chromebook that includes support for Android apps. Once you have confirmed your device supports Android, there are several ways to download the Proton VPN Android app. For most users, the easiest way to download and install our app will be to get it directly from the Google Play Store. Most Chromebooks come with the Play Store already preinstalled.

If your Chromebook does not have the Play Store, don’t worry. We have made our Android app’s APK available on our download page, GitHub, and F-Droid, the largest repository of free and open source Android APKs.

Download Proton VPN for Chromebook

Once you have installed the app, it will appear in your app menu. Double-click the Proton VPN icon to launch the app.

If you already have a Proton account, you can log in using your Proton username and password. If you are not already signed up for a Proton account, you will need to create a new account. Sign up for a Free plan for Chromebook and then return to the app.

All Proton Mail users automatically have access to the Free version of Proton VPN. Simply sign in to the Proton VPN app using your Proton Mail login credentials.

Once you are logged in, you can select the country and server you would like to connect to.

A screenshot of the Proton VPN VPN server selection screen on a Chromebook.

Note. If enabled, disconnecting via the system tray will disable the Always on and Block connections without VPN settings. To keep these settings enabled, please Disconnect from within the Proton VPN app.

Using Proton VPN on Chromebooks

A Chromebook is a laptop that uses the Linux-based Chrome OS as its operating system. To keep Chromebooks small and inexpensive, the apps and data they use are stored in the cloud rather than on the device itself.

Because Google owns the operating system itself, it is difficult to limit the company’s ability to monitor your activity on a Chromebook. Because of this, Proton VPN may be less effective at hiding your location and thwarting trackers.

Learn about how Google collects your data.

However, Proton VPN for Chromebook enables you to:

  • Access censored content — By connecting to a server on a different network or in another country, you can access content that would otherwise be blocked.
  • Securely stream geo-blocked films and shows — If you are a Proton VPN Plus subscriber, you can watch your favorite content on streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max no matter where you are. Learn how to watch your favorite movies and TV shows with our VPN streaming guide.
  • Protect your internet connection on public WiFi — Hackers can monitor a hotspot’s network traffic or even set up a malicious hotspot that they control. Proton VPN encrypts your internet connection so that even if your traffic is being monitored, your data remains secure and private.

Increased defense against censorship

We believe free speech is a fundamental human right, and our mission is to give everyone the ability to exercise it. We are working to increase access to our VPN by making our apps available in more languages. Similarly, by adding official support for Chromebooks to our Android app, we are making it easier for more people worldwide to access censored and blocked content.

Don’t forget to let us know what you think about using Proton VPN on your Chromebook on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Instagram, and Linkedin.

The latest version of the Proton VPN application for Windows adds two new features that make it even more secure and easier to use. Version 1.10 of our Windows app has the Smart Protocol feature, and it will automatically connect to the next best server if your VPN connection attempt fails.

Smart Protocol

Have you ever had your attempts to connect to our VPN repeatedly fail while you were at work or university? There’s a good chance these networks were blocking the transmission protocol you were using. Our new Smart Protocol feature ensures this will never happen to you again.

OpenVPN, the VPN protocol that our Windows app uses, supports both the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). These protocols both determine how the Proton VPN app sends and receives the data packets that make up your Internet traffic. While TCP and UDP handle these packets differently, the more important property when it comes to evading VPN blocks is what port they use. A port is the endpoint or point of origin for your online traffic.

Learn more: What’s the difference between UDP and TCP?

UDP uses port 1194, which is the default port for OpenVPN. This makes it relatively easy for Internet service providers (ISPs) or network administrators to block it. TCP, on the other hand, can be configured to use port 443, the same port that handles that vast majority of Internet traffic. Blocking that port without potentially making a large portion of the Internet inaccessible is much more difficult.

Port UDP-1194 and port TCP-443 are the ports Proton VPN app uses by default. There are other backup ports for both UDP and TCP in case these ports are blocked. (We do not want to list them here as then hostile ISPs and networks could block them.) If the main port for either UDP or TCP is blocked, the app will search through the backup ports and use the one that offers the fastest connection.

When Smart Protocol is enabled, the Proton VPN app will attempt to connect to the VPN server using UDP. If the app detects that your connection is blocked, it will automatically switch from UDP to TCP and try to connect again. Smart Protocol is the default transmission protocol for the app and any user-created profiles.

Connect to next best server

Not all failed connections are the result of ISPs or network blocks on VPNs. Sometimes the server you have chosen to connect to is under maintenance, other times there are network issues. Now, if the Windows app fails to connect to a server, it will automatically try to connect to the next best server, as determined by the server’s location and load.

You can get Proton VPN for free on Windows. If you don’t already have Proton VPN on your computer, download our Windows app today to start protecting your online activity.

For those who already use our Windows app, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and Instagram and let us know what you think about these new updates. We hope you enjoy them!

The Proton VPN Team

Geneva, Switzerland

Proton VPN is pleased to announce the global launch of its Android mobile application today. The Proton VPN Android app is a free Virtual Private Network (VPN) service for Android that allows users to browse the web without being tracked, bypass online censorship blocks, and also increases security by passing all internet traffic through a strongly encrypted tunnel.

Proton VPN is developed by the same team of scientists who met at CERN and created ProtonMail, the world’s largest encrypted email service with millions of users worldwide that has become the favored email service of many activists, journalists, and individuals concerned about online rights and privacy.

“It is important to make the tools that protect online privacy and freedom widely accessible,” says Proton Mail Co-Founder Dr. Andy Yen, “for this reason, we are releasing Proton VPN on Android for free, without bandwidth limits or other data caps.”

In the past year, there have been more and more threats against a free Internet, included the repeal of Obama-era rules designed to protect consumer internet browsing history, the recent US FCC vote to , not to mention the over 1.5 billion people around the world who live with censored Internet. Proton VPN is designed to give consumers around the world an easily accessible tool for defending privacy, security, and freedom online.

While Android VPNs have existed for many years, Proton VPN draws upon the Company’s extensive security experience and introduces several important security innovations. Proton VPN features a Secure Core architecture which routes traffic through multiple encrypted tunnels in multiple countries to better defend against network based attacks, and also features seamless integration with the Tor anonymity network.

The most important differentiator however, is that unlike other “free” VPNs, the Proton VPN does not show ads, install malware, or sell user data in order to monetize. Recent studies have shown that 38% of Android VPN apps actually contain malware, and several prominent free VPN services have recently been caught secretly selling user data. The free service is instead funded by paid subscribers and subsidized by Proton Mail.

“Strong encryption and privacy are a social and economic necessity. Not only does this technology protect activists and dissidents, it is also key to protecting democracy in the digital age,” says Yen, “There are 2 billion Android users worldwide, and being able to provide each and every one of them access to secure Internet is a major milestone in our mission to make online privacy a reality again for all Internet users.”

Proton Mail, the world’s largest encrypted email provider, is announcing today the immediate worldwide release of Proton VPN, an innovative new VPN service built in response to increasing online surveillance and threats to net neutrality.

This is the first new product developed by Swiss security firm Proton AG since the introduction of Proton Mail 3 years ago. Since Proton Mail was first launched in May 2014 by a group of scientists who met at CERN and MIT, the service has become the preferred email provider for millions of people around the world. Users include businesses, individuals, activists and journalists drawn to the service’s strong end-to-end encryption, ease-of-use, and open source software.

The team that created Proton Mail was motivated to create Proton VPN to combat increased threats to online freedom. In the past six months alone, these threats have included the repeal of Obama-era rules designed to protect consumer internet browsing history, calls by Prime Minister Theresa May for increased online surveillance, and the recent attempts by the US FCC to dismantle net neutrality. This is not to mention the over 1.5 billion people around the world who live with censored Internet.

“In the past year, we have seen more and more challenges against Internet freedom,” says Proton Mail Co-Founder Dr. Andy Yen, “now more than ever, we need robust tools for defending privacy, security, and freedom online.”

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows users to browse the web without being tracked, bypass online censorship blocks, and also increases security by passing all internet traffic through a strongly encrypted tunnel. In order to make this technology more accessible, the Company will also provide a free version of the service.

“The best way to ensure that encryption and privacy rights are not encroached upon is to get the tools into the hands of the public as soon as possible and widely distributing them,” says Yen, “This is why, as with Proton Mail, we’re committed to making a free version of Proton VPN available to the world.”

While VPNs have existed for many years, Proton VPN draws upon the Company’s extensive security experience and introduces several important security innovations. Proton VPN features a Secure Core architecture which routes traffic through multiple encrypted tunnels in multiple countries to better defend against network based attacks, and also features seamless integration with the Tor anonymity network.

Proton VPN operates under Swiss jurisdiction and is protected by some of the world’s strongest privacy laws. Proton VPN also stands out for its transparency as it is perhaps the only VPN service on the market today that is developed by a team that is publicly known, with strong security and privacy credentials.

“Strong encryption and privacy are a social and economic necessity. Not only does this technology protect activists and dissidents, it is also key to securing the world’s digital infrastructure,” says Yen, “Encrypted communications is the future and with Proton VPN, we’re committed to making online privacy a reality again for all Internet users.”
